ActivitiesDSLA’s extracurricular activities of course, are at least as much fun as the instruction. Yearly, active parents, teachers and board members, organize several events, some of which are visited by the Dutch community at large. Dutch School San Diego organizes its own activities.Open HouseOnce a year, the classroom doors are opened to family and friends, so they can come and see what the children learn and do at the Dutch school. This offers an opportunity for anyone who is interested to look at the materials and get a taste of our classroom atmosphere.SinterklaasIn early December, St. Nicholas pays a special visit to the children of Los Angeles. We have a party in the Dutch tradition, with presents and treats. One year the good Saint had his horse stolen and the police had to get him to the party on time! Ever since this traumatic event he arrives in the traditional manner on a genuine boat in the Port of Los Angeles. This unique and renowned celebration is open to all.Film MatineeOnce a year, we organize a film matinee with Dutch children's films in a real theater. Films we have watched include De Daltons, Madelief, Leve de Koningin! en Minoes. Films are by Invitation only.Queens DayAnd then there is this traditional Dutch celebration around the end of April. We alternate celebrating this event at North Hollywood and at Orange County. This celebration has turned into a big party featuring an opening speech from one of our Consuls, great food, games, a free-market, music and of course we sing our national Anthem, the “Wilhelmus “.Holland FestivalThe Holland Festival in Long Beach takes place at the end of May. The DSLA customarily has an information booth.And then ...The first and last day of school, Christmas and New Year's, the Dutch and Belgians will always find an occasion to treat themselves with coffee. All locations have their spontaneous initiatives that make the school day special.Flemish eventsWe would love to celebrate Flemish events, and ask our Flemish parents to help us with that. |
